MBS items

About:

The MBS Review Advisory Committee (MRAC) is conducting a review of time-tiered Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS) items for primary care. The scope of this review is broad, covering all time-tiered items for general practitioners and nurse practitioners.

CHF in partnership with the Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC)’s initiative Strengthening Medicare, is engaging up to twenty (20) consumers in the review of time-tiered MBS items for primary care. This review focuses on ensuring that the structure of these items aligns with modern healthcare practices and supports equitable access for all Australians.

Time-tiered MBS items are a key element of primary care, used by general practitioners and nurse practitioners to structure consultations. The MRAC seeks consumer input on their experiences with these items, including:

  • Perception of the MBS for primary care

  • Understanding how the structure of time-tiered items affects billing processes, and,

  • Barriers to accessing care, such as after-hours or home visit services.

Consumer feedback from this roundtable will help inform the MRAC's recommendations during this early stage of the review, with further consultations planned later. Further information about DoHAC’s initiative Strengthening Medicare can be accessed in the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce Report.

The opportunity and your role:
