The purpose of this Quality use of Diagnostics, Therapeutics and Pathology project is to create an online program that supports best practice conversations between consumers and healthcare providers about safe and appropriate medicines use. The program will:

  • Be co-designed with health professionals and consumers.

  • Address key barriers to shared decision making.

  • Leverage existing content wherever possible.

  • Be readily accessible.

  • Integrate into existing health professional training packages/curriculum wherever possible.

  • be able to be co-branded and be adapted for specific needs of individual health professional groups.

  • Be actively promoted.

This program aims to target practicing health professionals as well as undergraduate medical, pharmacy and nursing students. The program is designed to increase awareness of the complexities of health literacy, ways to assess health literacy levels in consumers and how to tailor conversations and information accordingly.

The program will have a particular focus on supporting conversations with consumers who have multiple chronic conditions and are at greater risk of medication-related harms.

Culturally appropriate resources will be included to support shared decision making with consumers from a range of backgrounds.
