The National Health Information Strategy
Information and discussion webinar
What impact could events like COVID-19 have on Australia’s future health information strategy? Hear ABC Coronacast’s Dr Norman Swan and others talk on this, and more, at the webinar recorded on 24 April 2020.
The Consumer Health Forum of Australia (CHF) has partnered with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) to lead a consumer-focused discussion of the National Health Information Strategy (NHIS) development process and get consumer inputs and insights into what the NHIS should look like to improve the healthcare system for all Australians.
- Neville Millen, Consumer Advocate
- Jenny Hargreaves, AIHW Data Governance Group
- Leanne Wells, CHF CEO and IEP member
- Dr Norman Swan, producer and presenter of ABC’s Coronacast and The Health Report.
- Mark Metherell, CHF Communications Director (Panel Chair)
The NHIS will fill a gap–a lack of a national, targeted health data and information strategy. The Strategy will aim to achieve integrated, effective and timely health data and information. The outcome will be a 10–15 year vision, and an enduring framework that will support the information needs of all who use, work in and manage Australia’s health system. The Strategy will be provided to the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council (AHMAC) and the Council of Australian Governments (CoAG) Health Council in late 2020 and then published. The NHIS will support a series of 3–4 year National Health Information Investment Plans to shape strategic investment in health information. This comprehensive approach will focus on developing a co-ordinated, more patient-centred health information system.
The Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council (AHMAC) has tasked, via its Health Services Principal Committee and AIHW, an Independent Expert Panel (IEP) to oversee the development of the NHIS. The Independent Expert Panel is comprised of Professor Mike Daube, Professor Sandra Eades, Professor Louisa Jorm, Professor Michael Kidd and Ms Leanne Wells. More information about the NHIS proposal can be found on the AIHW website here.
